On May 16-17, 2014, the Sapienza University in Rome, Italy, will be hosting a conference on “The Political Economy of International Law” (PEIL Conference). Political Economy seeks to study the “why” questions (why do we have laws, institutions, independent courts) using as explanatory variables the “who” questions (who are the actors – legislators, executives, judges, interest groups – that participate in shaping the law) and “what” motivates them (their preferences) on the one hand and on their constraints (power, resources, given institutions and law etc.) on the other hand.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) as well as the Canadian-European Trade Agreement (CETA) are just the more prominent examples of a more general tendency to establish preferential trade agreements. Prospects, challenges and concerns of these agreements as well as their potential impact on the international economic order and on the World Trade Organization in particular will be discussed at an international conference, which is convened jointly by the interest group on international economic law of the European Society of International Law and the Institute for International Law and European Law – which organizes the event.  The conference will take place in Göttingen on March 6-8, 2014.
